A state-of-the-art research and institute building for the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) is being built in Heidelberg’s Neuenheim district. In the immediate vicinity of the university and other medical and scientific facilities, a building complex is being constructed that will unite three central units: the National Cancer Prevention Center, the Center for Digital Oncology and the DKFZ-Hector Cancer Institute.

We are responsible for the complete shell construction for this project – including extensive earthworks and drainage work as well as all concrete, brickwork and sealing work. The construction method is characterized by high demands on structural planning, fire protection and functionality, especially due to the highly sensitive laboratory areas and technical areas.

The building is divided into several levels above and below ground, with differentiated functional areas: Laboratories, offices, meeting zones, technical centers as well as publicly accessible areas such as seminar rooms, a cafeteria and a large event area.

The tight inner-city location within an active research campus poses a particular challenge. The construction site logistics are precisely timed – not only because of the ongoing operations of the neighboring institutes, but also because of the parallel construction projects in the immediate vicinity.

Sustainability is a top priority: The new building will be certified according to the criteria of the German Sustainable Building Council (BNB).
